Sport and Recreation Work

Heather is currently a research student in a PhD program at the University of Guelph School of Environmental Design and Rural Development. Her research is in the area sport for social development and resilience in the rural context. Connected fields include nature-based experiential learning, use of nature for leisure in rural communities, regional assets for well-being, sport for youth development, animal-assisted therapy and the links between developing social connections and individual capacities through sport and leisure, and development of civil engagement and social capital.

Heather’s other experiences in sport participation and administration include:

– Directing development and growth of national programs for coach and athlete education

– Editing and contributing content to national program manuals for coaches and athletes
– Innovating in the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model for equestrian sport
– Directing implementation of LTAD model within Equestrian sport
– Researching and reporting on athlete development funnels; program growth

– Writing funding applications and obtaining funding for sport program projects and directing pilots
– Organizing and running a rural community sport program for youth with disabilities
– Publishing and speaking on sport conditioning for youth, adult amateur ‘active for life’ participants and higher performance athletes
– Publishing and speaking on coaching and athlete development
– Coaching in equestrian sport, biomechanics and fitness and conditioning
– Teaching physical literacy and life skills in a Montessori gym program
– Developing sport sponsorship programs and signing sponsors
– Leading groups on hiking daytrips
– Competing in the Learn to Compete phase of equestrian sport, adult amateur team sailing, varsity Rugby, the Canadian Ski Marathon and dog obedience trials.
